From the technological cradle of Pisa, the AI solution to support worldwide level manufacturing

Fedrigoni Machinery

June 19th 2023, Pisa – The production performance monitoring platforms, created by Kode for Fedrigoni, have just been released. Fedrigoni, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of special papers for luxury packaging and other creative solutions, and of labels and self-adhesive materials, selected for this project 13 machines (10 of which for continuous production), distributed in 7 plants throughout Italy. This project allowed to digitalise the production process, hence increasing performance control and optimization.

“Production optimization (through performance monitoring) is the natural consequence of good use of data by smart, forward-looking management, like Fedrigoni’s“. (Marco Calderisi)

This was a huge project, based on FactorAI, the industry 5.0 solution developed by Kode. The project integrated all the selected plants in just three years. Furthermore, Kode realised a custom version of platform especially for Fedrigoni, in order to acquire over 20.000 different machinery’s signals. The custom platform pre-processs and standardises all these signals to ensure a clear vision of the overall production efficiency.

FactorAI and its modules for performance monitoring and optimization

FactorAI Data Management Module filled this data collector’s role and evolved to allow operators to note day-by-day operational information. In addition to that, FactorAI SPC module integrated the platform, empowering it.

As a matter of fact, this second module, focused on Statistical Process Control, offers indicators that calculate time, material and speed efficiency (in relation to the targets set for each type of production). In the end, it summarises each plant’s performance in the OEE, Overall Equipment Effectiveness.

Therefore, Fedrigoni’s goal was not only to be able to clearly and quickly monitor production performance. They also and above all want to extract useful knowledge for intervening on the plants. The objective is to avoid waste, reduce scrap and identify the specific needs of each type of production. Indeed, optimising does not always mean increasing: a higher speed can also generate a rise in waste, thus reducing material efficiency. The goal, therefore, is an effective improvement in production methods as a whole.

Says Marco Calderisi, CEO of Kode: “”Turning data into understandable information that generates knowledge has always been our mission. Production optimization (both economically and in terms of sustainability) is the natural consequence of good use of data by smart, forward-looking management, like Fedrigoni’s. We are proud that their choice to invest in digitalization with us has been confirmed for more than 3 years now.”

The project will continue with ongoing maintenance support, on all the involved plants.
