Advanced Monitoring

Security for Optimized

Supply Chain Management

In the valuable goods logistics sector, security, traceability, and transport efficiency are increasingly critical challenges. Traditional solutions are often reactive, with limited capacity for prevention and real-time intervention.

In this context, the shift toward an intelligent supply chain is emerging, based on IoT, AI, and distributed systems, in line with the Physical Internet vision.

Challenge

The project arises from the need to overcome the limitations of conventional logistics solutions by developing an integrated system of advanced technology and sensors within logistics load units for optimized Supply Chain management.

The primary objective of the project is to develop an advanced packaging prototype with integrated features to ensure the security and efficiency of transporting valuable goods, while also promoting sustainability, by introducing:

  • continuous tracking of load units,
  • real-time detection of anomalies and tampering attempts,
  • integration of IoT, AI, and blockchain technologies into a single infrastructure,
  • optimization of logistics processes from a predictive and proactive perspective,
  • reduction of operational costs and environmental impact.

The Intelligent Logistics Unit (ILU) will therefore be not only more secure, but also reusable, in line with the principles of the circular economy and the concept of reuse compared to traditional single-use containers.

Solution

The secure system

SafePath is an industrial research project that develops an integrated system for supply chain security and traceability through intelligent load units equipped with advanced sensors and connected to a cloud platform.

The system combines:

  • IoT embedded in the load units,
  • artificial intelligence algorithms for anomaly and intrusion detection,
  • real-time geolocation and tracking,
  • blockchain for the notarization of critical events,
  • a cloud platform for orchestrating data and logistics events,
  • interfaces and APIs based on GS1 EPCIS 2.0 standards.

IoT-enabled load units

Starting from transport boxes that must meet strict quality requirements (such as delivery reliability and environmental conditions), an infrastructure has been developed that leverages contextual information, including location, to make both the conditions and position of goods traceable.La scatola realizzata, risultando resiliente ai tentativi di effrazione, in grado di ospitare in modo sicuro la sensoristica IoT e garantire l’integrazione dei dispositivi di monitoraggio.

The developed box is resistant to tampering attempts, capable of securely housing IoT sensors, and ensures the integration of monitoring devices.

Cloud platform

Development of a hardware platform capable of supporting multiple IoT sensors and securely and reliably transmitting data to the cloud platform, in order to orchestrate data flows, generate events, and enable advanced analytics on shipment status.

AI anti-tampering models

Implementation of artificial intelligence models for the real-time detection of tampering attempts, based on the analysis of sensor data, along with techniques to enable proactive interventions, such as real-time rerouting, minimizing risks and costs associated with deviations or security threats.

GIS-based tracking

Development of an advanced tracking system to monitor the position and status of cargo throughout the entire supply chain.

Blockchain system

The infrastructure has been enhanced with blockchain technologies to notarize value-added visibility elements (e.g., exceeding defined thresholds), ensuring the secure and immutable management of critical shipment information, with particular attention to legally relevant events.

Interfaces and APIs

Development of graphical interfaces and interoperable APIs based on the international GS1 EPCIS 2.0 logistics standard for integration with external logistics systems.

The Partner

This project, funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU, was launched in response to the call for industrial research and experimental development projects focused on Industry 4.0 enabling technologies for the security of critical infrastructures, issued by Start4.0 within the framework of PNRR Mission 4 – Component 2 (M4C2) – Investment 2.3 – Strengthening and thematic and territorial expansion of technology transfer centers for industrial sectors. The consortium, including Kode together with NGSElif LabUtilplastic and Net4U,  brings together leading companies in the fields of IoT, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.

Expected results

  • Reduction in the risk of theft and damage by up to 25%.
  • Reduction in logistics costs by up to 20%.
  • Reduction in waste thanks to the container’s reusability.
  • Improved supply chain transparency and security.

Aligned with START 4.0’s strategic objectives, the project focuses on the secure and autonomous traceability of valuable goods in the logistics sector. The project integrates key elements of safety, security, and cybersecurity within advanced logistics. SafePath contributes to the transformation of logistics toward an intelligent, sustainable, and proactive model, where security, efficiency, and digitalization converge in a single integrated infrastructure..
