Cable

for the full implementation of the

principles of the circular economy

and the digital transition in the sectors

of transport, energy, and connectivity

The project

The challenge

The project involves the design, development, and prototyping of innovative cables for energy transmission and telecommunications, capable of integrating new functionalities not yet present in the current state of the art at an international level.

The new cables will feature a composition that ensures production and end-of-life management processes with higher environmental sustainability levels than those currently available in the sector.

Additionally, the project aims to study and develop a range of high-tech sheaths for the new cable prototypes, based on polymeric matrices derived from both bio-based sources and the chemical and mechanical recycling of plastic materials.

The context

Project co-financed by POR FESR 2021-2027 – Action: 1.1.4. Research and development for companies also in groupings with research organizations – Call 1 “Research and Development Projects” – Call approved with DD n. 27716 – 29/12/2023 subsequently amended and supplemented – Project “Development and prototyping of innovative electrical and telecommunication cables with high circularity, traceability and visibility, in implementation of the principles of circular economy and digital transition in the energy transport and data connectivity sectors” – Acronym “CircularEconomyCable” – Request: CUP 27716.29122023.042000136

Project implementation period: 2024-2026

Project total budget: € 2.991.125,95

Budget of KODE S.r.l.: €. 319.787,40 €

Financial support received by KODE S.r.l.€ 143.904,33

Results

The study led to the development of a new type of sheathing based on polymer matrices derived from both bio-based sources and the chemical and mechanical recycling of plastic material.

Thanks to these new solutions, it will be possible to redesign cable production using highly sustainable materials and complying with the most advanced principles of the bioeconomy and circular economy, while at the same time making the production system more resilient to possible supply issues thanks to the diversification of sources and raw materials used.
