BCN

Digital Twin

for the digital management

of industrial infrastructures

BCN Concerie is one of the most innovative companies in the sector. Building on its constant investment in product innovation, the company has decided to extend this approach to the entire organization. Together with Kode, BCN has launched a digitalization project for managing the production process, also covering infrastructure management and the maintenance of machinery and production plants.

CHALLENGE

With this project to digitalize the monitoring and management of industrial infrastructure maintenance operations, the company aims to optimize maintenance processes and improve operational efficiency through a data-driven approach. The main objectives include:

  • enhancing the planning, management, and monitoring of maintenance activities;
  • reducing errors during operational phases;
  • increasing overall productivity.

The BCN plant digitalization platform is designed to simplify the collection and consultation of machinery data across the company’s various tanning facilities, supporting operators in maintenance tasks and ensuring a more accurate and efficient process.

SOLUTION

The Phases

The implementation of the project required three key phases:

  • AS-IS analysis and definition of functional requirements
  • Development and integration of ad hoc modules for plant management
  • Development of a digital twin of the entire facility to optimize the planning and execution of maintenance activities

The Architecture

The custom platform, developed on the basis of FactorAI, consists of three main components:

  • A dedicated database, designed to model the production plant and all related information through a structured system of entities and relationships.
  • Services designed to simplify the mapping and integration of new plant sections, with dedicated modules for managing and uploading maintenance activities, as well as documentation related to the companies responsible for maintenance operations.
  • An intuitive, cross-browser, and responsive interface, accessible from any device. The platform is designed to ensure a seamless experience on both desktop and mobile, allowing operators to easily navigate the entire BCN production plant through the application.

Key features

To enable the platform to become a true operational tool supporting daily activities, it has been enriched with several key services and features:

  • Interactive calendar, allowing users to view all maintenance activities, both ordinary and extraordinary, whether completed or scheduled. In addition to interventions, the system also includes deadlines for documents issued by the companies in charge of maintenance, ensuring complete and organized monitoring.
  • Database, fully integrated with all other consultation areas, for managing and verifying the collection of documentation required for plant operations.
  • Advanced map, enabling quick and intuitive consultation of the plant’s machinery, while also offering functions for adding new spaces and reorganizing existing machines. This allows operators to independently manage the digital twin of the entire facility, ensuring flexible and dynamic control of the production infrastructure.

Results

Thanks to the creation of an integrated IT system, the project has made it possible to:

  • optimize production times
  • increase productivity
  • reduce the time required for maintenance planning and management

The project highlighted BCN’s innovative approach to maintenance management, earning the company the PMI Awards 2022 from the Digital Innovation Observatory in SMEs of the Politecnico di Milano, right from its first release.
